Elevating Healthcare for Women and Children: University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital
The University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital is more than a healthcare building—it’s a place of comfort and healing for women, children, and their families in South Texas. As the first hospital in the region solely dedicated to women’s and children’s health, it reflects a deep commitment to patient well-being and community care. The 14-story, 299-bed tower provides maternal and pediatric care at its best, thoughtfully designed to serve with advanced technology and a welcoming, supportive atmosphere. This achievement sets a new standard in healthcare construction, demonstrating how thoughtful design can prioritize community needs.
Designed with Healing in Mind
Every corner of the University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital prioritizes patient comfort and peace. From private patient rooms and a Level IV NICU to family lounges filled with natural light, this space is crafted to provide calm and privacy when families need it most. Large windows offer views of nature, promoting both physical and emotional healing, while clear wayfinding and open spaces simplify navigation, making every visit a little easier. Inspired by the region’s heritage, the architecture combines local materials and Mission-inspired elements, creating a familiar and comforting atmosphere for all who walk through its doors.
Innovative Solutions for a Complex Build
Building a 14-story hospital on an active campus required careful, adaptable planning. Our team used off-site prefabrication—producing over 1,400 curtainwall panels, 516 exterior metal panels, and 251 bathroom pods in controlled environments—to ensure quality and reduce on-site congestion. Amid COVID-19 challenges, we prioritized safety through health screenings, enhanced cleaning, and virtual coordination with BIM 360, all while keeping quality and efficiency at the forefront. This approach exemplifies forward-thinking in healthcare construction, proving that complex projects can be delivered with minimal disruption and maximum care.
Commitment to Safety and Quality
Safety was central to every phase of this project. The Joeris + JE Dunn Joint Venture surpassed OSHA standards with a DCIP safety program, while off-site prefabrication kept the site organized and reduced hazards. Each prefabricated element was crafted in a controlled environment, which helped ensure the highest level of precision. The unique building envelope, including custom curtainwall panels, underwent extensive testing with trade partners and third-party inspectors to ensure resilience and quality for years to come. Our commitment to healthcare construction safety and quality shines in every detail.
Setting a New Standard for Community Wellness
With advanced units like the Level 1 pediatric trauma center and Level IV maternal and neonatal care, University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital is prepared to serve the community’s most critical needs. Family-centered spaces, ample natural light, and state-of-the-art medical technology make it a welcoming place of healing. This hospital represents a new chapter in healthcare construction for San Antonio, where collaboration, innovation, and thoughtful design create a comforting and supportive environment that reflects Joeris’ commitment to community wellness and excellence.
